Resale, Consignment, & Vintage
In the era of fast fashion and AI-generated home decor filling big-box stores, I find myself looking for ways to shop sustainably. When I moved into my new apartment, I sourced furniture through Facebook Marketplace and various consignment shops. Many of my friends know that my favorite items to hunt for are vintage clothing, cookbooks, and kitchenware. Yet, there are times when I need a dress for a special occasion or a new pair of jeans. Embracing this approach to shopping sustainably has added a unique touch to my personal style.
Standard retail stores often fail to offer the exceptional value I find when shopping second-hand. Items such as blouses made with thin fabric or denim that falls apart after the second wash are no longer worth purchasing. In comparison, the items I’ve found at consignment or resale stores have lasted for years in my wardrobe. While many people are familiar with national chains like Goodwill and Plato’s Closet, there’s something extremely rewarding about discovering the small, locally owned businesses within Myrtle Beach and its surrounding areas.
Shop in Surfside and Murrells Inlet:
- J & P Treasures is a thrift store in Surfside Beach, SC, that truly believes thrifting should be affordable and charitable. Here, you can find a wide variety of furniture, home decor, and clothing. Every purchase made at J & P Treasures supports Limbs for Life, a nonprofit that provides prosthetic care to those who cannot afford it.
- Flamingo Porch is a consignment shop located in Murrells Inlet, SC, offering “high-quality and gently used” items. If you’re looking for coastal-themed home decor and furniture, Flamingo Porch is where you’d want to shop.
- Hudson’s Flea Market is located in Surfside Beach, SC. With over 100 vendors, Hudson’s is one of the largest open-air markets along the Grand Strand, making it an ideal destination for shopping for the most unique bargains.
Shop in Conway and Myrtle Beach:
- Carolina Marketplace is located in Conway, SC. With 12,000 square feet of space, this location is highly recommended by the locals for a unique $1-per-item deal on specific occasions. I highly suggest keeping an eye on their Facebook page for this announcement.
- Finders Keepers is located in Myrtle Beach, SC. This consignment shop offers a variety of pre-owned clothing and some furniture for affordable prices. This shop is right off of 501, headed towards the beach, making it a great stop on the way.
- Low Country Treasures is located in downtown Myrtle Beach, SC, close to the Convention Center. This antique store offers a wide variety of specialty items. If you’re looking for niche gifts for family, this is where I like to shop.
- Player’s Choice is located inside the Myrtle Beach Mall in Myrtle Beach, but closer to North Myrtle Beach, SC. This video game/comic book store is one of my most visited spots, and where my boyfriend took me on our first date. Home to some original arcade games, still playable at $0.25, this is absolutely a must-visit; you’ll feel like a kid again.
Shop in North Myrtle Beach and Little River:
- Fabulous Finds is located in North Myrtle Beach, SC. This luxury consignment shop is one I visit often if I’m looking for a dress or accessories for special events. The gently used, designer items are significantly more affordable than purchasing brand new.
- The Paper Rose Consignment is located in North Myrtle Beach, SC, inside the Everything Under the Sun Flea Market. While the market itself has some unique finds, I typically walk to the back (after a sweet treat from Rollover Bakery). I spend the most time shopping the variety of over 25 vendors such as Juniper Pines Vintage, Mad Biddy’s, and Sally’s Alley. I truly spend hours here and have purchased many of my favorite vintage cookbooks.
- Bookends Bookstore is located on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach, SC. This independently owned, used bookstore is one of my favorites in the area, with some of the best prices, especially for modern book readers.
- Beach Bookshop & Video is located in the Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach, SC. This is the bookstore I come to when I’m on the hunt for vintage copies of my favorite novels. You’ll find a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction, and the fine collection of rare books is unlike anything I’ve seen.
- Tiny Tiger’s Kids is a new addition to the area of Little River, SC, but I can guarantee it’s about to become well-known. Purchasing second-hand kids’ clothes is perfect for practicing sustainability and affordability, especially for new parents and grandparents.
